Why the US Senate Should Refuse to Confirm Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court

Imagine if a future president nominated a Supreme Court justice who most people thought probably was a racist and probably hated blacks and other non-whites, although no one knew for sure since he had never made a ruling on racist issues. Imagine that civil liberty groups all opposed this new nominee while the KKK and Aryan Nation were urging the Senate to hold hearings with the hope of seeing him confirmed. We would all agree that such a nominee did not even deserve a hearing.

Now replace “probably a racist” with “probably supports misusing the US Constitution to protect killing unborn babies”. Replace the “KKK and Aryan nation” with two organizations which promote the widespread murder of unborn babies, “Planned Parenthood and NARAL”. Imagine those morally equivalent changes (racism is extremely evil and killing unborn babies is extremely evil) and you have a description of President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, Merrick Garland. He does not deserve a hearing.

We should all pray that the US Senate will stand firm and refuse to give him a hearing. If they allow a hearing, then every individual Senator will face a firestorm of pressure to give in and confirm him. I encourage you to read (or reread) my earlier blogpost on the “Stand Firm Prayer”. Our prayers matter.
